Movie Review Kong: Skull Island 4 Stars.

I enjoyed this fantasy movie. Suspending disbelief and allowing yourself to come along for the ride is what Kong: Skull Island is all about. Its fun, scary, suspenseful and occasionally touching; but never dull.

Based in the early 1970s, a secret US government funded operation is set in motion concerning the identity of a mysterious uncharted island in the South Pacific; that has recently been revealed by satellite imagery. The pseudo-scientists are looking for mysterious creatures that somehow have to be found before their Cold War counterparts the Russians find it.

Oh it gets better, they also need a team of soldiers that due to the winding up of the Vietnam War are keen to go on another hazardous mission. They set out in the calvary of military helicopters and enter the domain of gigantism; all the wildlife on the island are huge – and if they wont eat you they will certainly stomp you to death. This initial reconnaissance mission across the island to set off depth charges also arouses the mighty Kong to go haywire on the choppers taking them out.

The calvary leader (Samuel L. Jackson has found his worthy challenge after the disappointing result of the war he just left to be here. The rest of the survivors are keen to get to the coast of the island and await a rescue mission.

Will they or won’t they make it?

To add the story, a fighter pilot from the Second World War (John C. Reilly) is still living on the island after 28 years with the natives and warns the vengeful soldiers that Kong is in fact, crucial to the island’s ecosystem. That in the local food chain he is vital to keeping subterranean monsters at bay that would wreak havoc all over the place if the alpha food chain link were disposed of. Kong keeps the balance on Skull Island. Will they listen to reason or revenge?

I was fortunate to have watched this blockbuster in 3D at the world’s biggest iMax cinema in Melbourne, Australia and sat as close as comfort and viewing appreciation allowed. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures produced this movie. Somehow, I feel this is a taste of things to come; the sequels are in the making as we speak.

I enjoyed Kong: Skull Island I gave it 4 Stars.
